There are many ways to see the island of O\u02bbahu\u2014take a guided tour, hitch a ride on a helicopter, or explore the coast by boat. \u00a0These are all exciting options, but we prefer sightseeing by car. The reason? \u00a0Well, you choose the route, you can linger as long as you want, and you can eat and shop along the way.<\/p>\n

The island of O\u02bbahu is just the right size for taking a drive. It\u2019s large enough that you will not run out of things to do and sights to see yet small enough that you can complete the drive in one day.<\/p>\n

Chances are that although it\u2019s possible to see all of the island\u2019s postcard-worthy sights in one day, you won\u2019t want to. You\u2019ll meet a\u00a0honu<\/em>\u00a0(turtle) and want to stay to play. You\u2019ll discover a waterfall and decide to go for a swim. You\u2019ll hike a mountain and find the view is a perfect background for a photoshoot of you and your someone special, and you\u2019ll linger much longer than you intended. Nevertheless, here are our recommended stops for driving around O\u02bbahu in day.<\/p>\n

1. Waik\u012bk\u012b<\/h2>\n

Most visitors to Hawai\u02bbi stay in Waik\u012bk\u012b. This is most likely where you\u2019ll be starting your day. Watch surfers paddling out for their morning session or catch a wave yourself at\u00a0Waik\u012bk\u012b beach. You can also make the short, but the steep 0.8-mile\u00a0hike up Diamond Head. The trail will lead you to old military bunkers, a lighthouse, and summit views of the ocean and O\u02bbahu\u2019s Southern\u00a0coast. Getting outdoors and into nature is a great way to start the day!<\/p>\n

2. Hawai\u02bbi Kai and Waim\u0101nalo<\/h2>\n

The East side of the island is an outdoor lover\u2019s playground with\u00a0Sea Life Park\u00a0and\u00a0Hanauma Bay\u00a0being two great options for those wanting to see, swim, and play with Hawaiian marine life. If this is a priority for you, plan on spending lots of time in East O\u02bbahu. There will be so much to see.<\/p>\n

Another great way to start your road trip is with a short two-mile hike up to\u00a0Makapu\u2018u Point lighthouse. You can save Waik\u012bk\u012b and Diamond Head for another day and head out early for a sunrise hike. From the vantage point at Makapu\u02bbu, you\u2019ll gain gorgeous views of the sun coming up over the blue horizon, the coastline, Rabbit Island, Moloka\u02bbi, and even whales if you\u2019re there between December and May.<\/p>\n

The drive up the coast from Makapu\u02bbu will take you through the town of Waim\u0101nalo. Roadside cafes and eateries make this a convenient and\u00a0delicious\u00a0place to stop for a bite to eat. Waim\u0101nalo is a hidden treasure. Many people don\u2019t get the opportunity to experience this local haunt, but you can.<\/p>\n

3. Kailua<\/h2>\n

Not too far up the coast from Waim\u0101nalo is the trendy beach town of Kailua. If you want to see what everybody\u2019s been talking about, venture through Kailua to check out Lanikai beach, hike up\u00a0Lanikai pillboxes\u00a0for a whimsical view of the offshore Mokulua Islands\u00a0or sunbathe at Kailua beach. Both Lanikai and Kailua beaches have been winners of the prestigious #1 Beach in America title.<\/p>\n

With\u00a0many restaurants to choose from and lots of healthy options,\u00a0Kailua\u00a0is a great place to get a good meal. \u00a0We recommend eating here\u00a0before continuing your road trip, as dining options are limited along the stretch of road from Kailua to the North Shore.<\/p>\n

4. Pali Lookout<\/h2>\n

Located just\u00a0mauka<\/em>\u00a0(mountainside) of Kailua, there are two main reasons why you should check out Pali Lookout. One, you\u2019ll see amazing views of the Ko\u02bbolau Mountain Range. Two, this\u00a0pali<\/em>\u00a0(cliff) is the site of a major battle that took place in 1795. You\u2019ll be able to stand where King Kamehameha I and his army defeated the O\u02bbahu forces before going on to unite all of the islands into one kingdom. The strong winds and crisp air here are refreshing.<\/p>\n

5. K\u0101ne\u02bbohe<\/h2>\n

K\u0101ne\u02bbohe, the next stop on our drive around O\u02bbahu, is known for its rich, lush green landscapes. These two gorgeous stops prove it. You may have caught glimpses of the\u00a0Byodo-In Temple\u00a0in various shows like Hawaii Five-O and Magnum P.I. But even if you have, you\u2019ll still be in awe when you gaze upon the Japanese temple replica and its verdant surroundings.\u00a0Ho\u02bbomaluhia Botanical Gardens\u00a0is another tropical treasure with acres of Native Hawaiian plants and jaw-dropping Ko\u02bbolau mountain views.<\/p>\n

6. North Shore<\/h2>\n

Leaving K\u0101ne\u02bbohe destined for O\u02bbahu\u2019s epic North Shore, you\u2019re in for a scenic one-hour drive. You\u2019ll see lush forests, beautiful bay views, and O\u02bbahu\u2019s \u201ccountry\u201d side. You will pass the small offshore island called Chinaman\u2019s Hat as well as Kualoa Ranch where many movies have been filmed. (We highly recommend you come back to spend a day here.) You will also pass the Polynesian Cultural Center. (This is a great place to experience a l\u016b\u02bbau<\/em>. Maybe after your day at Kualoa?)<\/p>\n

When you see the shrimp trucks serving up yummy plates of garlic shrimp, you\u2019ve reached the North Shore country town of Kahuku. Travel a bit more and you\u2019ll hit Hale\u02bbiwa and the famous 7-mile miracle which is home to several white-sand beaches of miraculous beauty, starting with Sunset Beach and ending with Hale\u02bbiwa Beach Park. Laniakea Beach where the\u00a0honu are known to rest is located here. You can swim near the\u00a0honu\u00a0or watch them rest on the sandy shores but please don\u2019t touch.\u00a0Honu\u00a0are endangered species. During the summer, the 7-mile miracle beaches are picture-perfect for sunbathing or sunset walks. During the winter, big swells roll in, and the dangerous surf becomes a playground for the world\u2019s best watermen. Also along this 7-mile stretch is\u00a0Waimea Valley\u00a0where you can walk through a botanical garden, swim at a waterfall and participate in cultural activities.<\/p>\n

Cool off with\u00a0Matsumoto Shave Ice’s rainbow of tropical shave ice flavors. Matsumoto\u2019s is \u201cthe shave ice place\u201d on the North Shore. They do their toppings right and now they even have an edible cracker bowl imported from Japan. Mmm!<\/p>\n

7. Ko \u02bbOlina<\/h2>\n

The North Shore of O\u02bbahu is a beautiful place to end the day, and the sunsets are just stunning. If you\u2019ve made it this far, rest assured you\u2019ve seen the best of O\u02bbahu. However, if you\u2019ve made good time during your drive around O\u02bbahu, our last suggestion will be the icing on the cake. Ko \u02bbOlina on O\u02bbahu\u2019s Westside is wild and gorgeous. An area boasting breathtaking beaches, golf, and water activities, some of Hawai\u02bbi\u2019s best resorts are located here, like Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa, and Four Seasons Resort Oahu at Ko \u02bbOlina. You can swim in one of the area\u2019s four manmade lagoons, catch a traditional Hawaiian l\u016b\u02bbau at Paradise Cove or simply enjoy the sunset over the endless blue sea.<\/p>\n

Your drive time back into Waik\u012bk\u012b from Ko \u02bbOlina\u00a0will be about 45 minutes. \u00a0From Hale\u02bbiwa, the drive time back into Waik\u012bk\u012b is just under an hour.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
