But what does that mean, exactly? Well, let us educate you on some major points of how to be a better, more considerate traveler to Hawai\u02bbi.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

1. M\u0101lama \u02bb\u0100ina<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

In \u02bb\u014dlelo Hawai\u02bbi <\/em>(Hawaiian language), to m\u0101lama \u02bb\u0101ina <\/em>means to take care of the land. To pick up your \u02bb\u014dpala<\/em> (trash) is the least a visitor\u2014and resident\u2014can do when taking in some of Hawai\u02bbi\u2019s beaches and hikes, and taking a small trash bag with you to pick up after others is a great way to m\u0101lama \u02bb\u0101ina as well. There are also beach cleanup organizations, such as Sustainable Coastlines Hawai\u02bbi and 808 Cleanups that offer more thorough opportunities that will also get visitors meeting kama\u02bb\u0101ina<\/em> (residents of Hawai\u02bbi) and connecting with the local community through a greater cause. <\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

You can care for the land by also getting involved with voluntourism activities, such as helping to maintain a lo\u02bbi <\/em>(taro field) or even restore native wetlands. Nonprofits like Kanu Hawaii and Travel2change are both great ways to get connected with these programs, and learning about the real issues plaguing Hawai\u02bbi\u2014and helping to fix them\u2014will surely make your trip fulfilling and memorable. <\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

2. Embrace Local Culture<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Not only will you be seen as a more considerate and respectful traveler to Hawai\u02bbi if you learn to embrace local culture, you\u2019ll also just have a way <\/em>better time. There are various aspects of the local culture here in Hawai\u02bbi that can throw visitors for a loop, like cuisine you may have never seen or when someone speaks Pidgin\u2014a Hawai\u02bbi slang that has mixed and matched a handful of international languages and words. But in these scenarios, it\u2019s always best to embrace the unknown. Knowing some unspoken local rules, like never honking on the road or leaving your car unlocked at the beach, will also help to keep you out of trouble.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Not only should you learn about the local culture of Hawai\u02bbi, but educating yourself on the history of the Islands\u2014from the era of ancient Hawai\u02bbi to the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom\u2014can put a lot into perspective when visiting. Checking out a local museum, such as Kauai Museum or even \u02bbIolani Palace, is a great way to learn about the complex and deep history of Hawai\u02bbi. <\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

3. Learn to Look\u2014Without Touching<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Yes, it\u2019s an exciting moment when you see your first honu <\/em>(Hawaiian green sea turtle) resting on the beach. But please, don\u2019t touch. Not only is it seen as a highly disrespectful act, it\u2019s actually illegal and can be punishable by hefty fines and even jail time. More than the honu, please don\u2019t touch any of the wildlife\u2014like monk seals or fish\u2014here in Hawai\u02bbi and instead take a picture from a safe distance of ten feet or more. <\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Even inanimate objects don\u2019t enjoy the touchy-feely visitor. Heiau<\/em> (ancient Hawaiian temples and shrines) are often accessible to the public and some may not have any physical barrier between themselves and visitors, but that doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s ok to touch, grab or rub. These artifacts of ancient Hawai\u02bbi are\u2014literally\u2014thousands of years old, and to preserve them for future generations, we ask that you look, but don\u2019t touch.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

4. Support Local<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

There\u2019s nothing like supporting local businesses, retailers and producers in Hawai\u02bbi. From small mom-and-pop shops and boutiques to local chains\u2014like Zippy\u2019s\u2014everything you spend in Hawai\u02bbi on local businesses is a direct way to support our economy and promote local producers. Even choosing restaurants that make it a mission to get ingredients from local farms\u2014like Merriman\u2019s Honolulu on O\u02bbahu or Cafe O\u2019Lei at the Mill House on Maui\u2014is a great way to support local and get an authentic taste of what Hawai\u02bbi has to offer.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

5. Travel Sustainably<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Now more than ever, travelers have the option to practice sustainable and eco conscious efforts on their vacay. From taking a reusable water bottle with you on your trip to having a washable utensil kit on hand, there are so <\/em>many ways to create less waste on your trip. Tote bags are also a great way to avoid having to use single-use bags when carrying around your towels or lunch for the beach. What you shouldn\u2019t pack is sunscreen, however, as Hawai\u02bbi has placed a ban on sunscreens with coral-harming chemicals in them\u2014which can be purchased off island but not on island.
