While many cultures mark May 1 with springtime traditions, Hawai\u2018i has created a celebration uniquely its own \u2014 centered around the beauty of lei-making, music, and hula.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"413\" data-end=\"723\">Across the islands, schools, communities, and cultural groups come together in colorful displays of floral artistry and dance, honoring both nature and heritage. At its heart, May Day in Hawai\u2018i is a joyful reminder of the connection \u2014 between people, the land, and the rich traditions that continue to thrive today.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 361px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone caption-left\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"post-image-uniform\" style=\"object-position: top center;\" src=\"https:\/\/hawaii.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Hula-girls-on-Lei-Day-Chloe-Ward.jpg\" alt=\"Group of girls in Hawaiian leis for May Day in Hawai'i\" width=\"351\" height=\"472\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">May Day is Lei Day in Hawai&#8217;i, (Photo Credit: Chloe Ward)<\/p><\/div>\n<h2><strong>Honolulu\u2019s Lei Day Celebration<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The City and County of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.com\/hiking-in-hawaii\/manoa-falls-trail\/\">Honolulu<\/a> Department of Parks and Recreations, in conjunction with the Hawai\u2018i Tourism Authority, \u00a0holds the largest public celebration with its Annual Lei Day gala at Kapi\u2018olani Park Bandstand in Waik\u012bk\u012b.<\/p>\n<p>This celebration happens May 1 each year regardless of the day of the week. This year (2025) marks the 97th anniversary of Honolulu\u2019s Lei Day Celebration.<\/p>\n<p>This is the premier event showcasing the skill and talent of Hawai\u2018i\u2019s lei makers. In particular, the lei contest always attracts exquisitely crafted lei using a wide variety of materials, styles, and colors.<\/p>\n<p>Lei makers submit their fresh flower lei for the contest between 7:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. on the morning of the event. In addition, the day includes Hawaiian entertainment, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.com\/free-hawaii-activities\/hula-shows-on-maui\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hula<\/a> h\u0101lau performances, food, craft, and vendors.<\/p>\n<p>After the event ends, the flower lei from the contest are taken to Mauna \u2018Ala (The Royal Mausoleum) and Kawaiaha\u2018o Church where they are placed on the graves and tombs of Hawai\u2018i\u2019s ali\u2018i (chiefs and royalty).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Learn how to grow your own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardeningknowhow.com\/ornamental\/flowers\/plumeria\/growing-plumeria.htm#:~:text=Plumeria%20Water%20&amp;%20Light%20Requirements,new%20growth%20appears%20in%20spring.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lei flowers<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Origins of May Day in Hawai&#8217;i<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Don Blanding came to Hawai\u02bbi from Oklahoma in 1915. Before that, he had seen a play called \u201cThe Bird of Paradise,\u201d which was a romantic, but untrue, story about Hawai\u02bbi. Upon arrival in the islands, he began writing newspaper ads for Ajinomoto Foods and eventually became a successful author and artist.<\/p>\n<p>In 1927, Blanding and a fellow Honolulu Star-Bulletin writer named Grace Tower Warren came up with the idea of honoring Hawaii&#8217;s lei, which they thought to be in decline at the time. (Photo credit: Kaua&#8217;i Museum)<\/p><\/div>\n<h2><strong>Lei Day Festivities on Other Hawaiian Islands<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><strong>K<\/strong><strong>aua\u2018i<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Irmalee and Walter Pomroy founded the Kaua\u2018i Museum\u2019s (4428 Rice St., L\u012bhu\u2018e) May Day lei contest, a celebration of traditional lei-making that continues today. Irmalee was named a \u201cLiving Treasure\u201d in 2002 for her cultural contributions. (Photo credit: Bailey House Museum)<\/p><\/div>\n<h3><strong>Maui<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The Maui Historical Society sponsors an annual Lei Day Heritage Festival at the Hale H\u014d\u2018ike\u2018ike at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.com\/hawaii-tourist-attractions\/maui-museums\/\">Bailey House<\/a> (2375A Main St., Wailuku) in Wailuku. (Photo credit: Hawaiianscribe)<\/p><\/div>\n<h3><strong>Big Island of Hawai\u2018i<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.com\/hawaii-show\/king-kalakaua-the-merrie-monarch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kal\u0101kaua<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.com\/hawaii-show\/king-kalakaua-the-merrie-monarch\/\">Park<\/a> (136 Kal\u0101kaua St, Hilo) is the site for the annual Lei Day celebration on the Big Island. Music, hula, a lei contest, and lei-making workshops are always part of the fun.<\/p>\n<p>Hilo native Kuana Torres Kahele, an entertainer and master lei maker, lends his knowledge to the community. (Photo Credit: Kamehameha Schools)<\/p><\/div>\n<h2><strong>Everybody Celebrates May Day in Hawai&#8217;i<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><strong>Schools and the Lei Day Court<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Nearly every school in Hawai\u2018i hosts a Lei Day program that includes hula performances, traditional dress, and a Lei Day Court honoring Hawaiian royalty. These celebrations teach keiki the values of aloha, respect, and unity through song, dance, and cultural pride. Both traditional <strong data-start=\"185\" data-end=\"200\">hula kahiko<\/strong> and modern <strong data-start=\"212\" data-end=\"227\">hula \u2018auana<\/strong> performances bring Hawaiian legends, nature, and love stories to life. Giving or receiving a lei is a personal gesture of love or welcome, often shared with a hug or kiss on the cheek.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"334\" data-end=\"465\">Crafting a lei takes intention, patience, and a deep respect for nature \u2014 qualities that reflect the heart of the Hawaiian worldview.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>May Day in Hawai&#8217;i Celebrates Cultural Preservation\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Organizations like the <a href=\"https:\/\/hawaii.com\/discover-the-bishop-museum-a-cultural-treasure-in-honolulu\/\"><strong>Bishop Museum<\/strong><\/a> and the Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA) help keep Lei Day traditions alive through education and community outreach. Most importantly, h\u0101lau hula (hula schools) continue to host Lei Day events, passing knowledge and tradition to the next generation.<\/p>\n<p>Even social media has a role \u2014 sharing images, chants, and hula performances with a global audience.
