This is where you\u2019ll find <\/span>Nick Loewenstine<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a shark diver, wildlife photographer and founder of one of Hawai\u02bbi\u2019s most respected ocean adventure operations: Shark Diving on O\u02bbahu.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loewenstine\u2019s not here for the tourist hustle. He\u2019s not offering sunset cruises or snorkeling-with-sea-turtle packages. He and his crew specialize in one thing: <\/span>sharks<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And he\u2019s been doing it long before it became a bucket-list Instagram post.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe&#8217;re shark people. That\u2019s our operation 98% of the time,\u201d Loewenstine said. \u201cIf you&#8217;re going to do this, you have to love it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loewenstine\u2019s story starts far from the islands. Originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, life took him to Sydney, Australia, and eventually Hale\u02bbiwa on O\u02bbahu\u2019s North Shore, where he\u2019s lived for more than a decade. His connection to sharks began at age 14, during a shark feed in the Caribbean. \u201cI kind of got addicted from that,\u201d Loewenstine said. \u201cBy 17, I was diving with great whites in Mexico.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The path since has been global: Fiji, the Bahamas, Australia, the Arctic Circle. But Hawai\u02bbi\u2019s waters\u2014and its community of ocean lovers\u2014called him here. Photo courtesy of Nick Loewenstein.<\/p><\/div>\n<h3><b>A Dive with Nick Isn\u2019t Just a Tour\u2014It\u2019s a Perspective Shift<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forget the movie myths. Forget the adrenaline-fueled \u201cJaws\u201d soundtrack. Diving with sharks is not what you think.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat surprises most people is how peaceful it is,\u201d Loewenstine explained. \u201cYou&#8217;re swimming in open water with an apex predator, and it&#8217;s calm. It\u2019s surreal. These animals\u2014these creatures of myth\u2014are curious, but not aggressive. They\u2019re not the monsters people think they are.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loewenstine and his team take safety seriously, running dives with groups no larger than six guests, guided by a captain, a safety diver and often a professional photographer who doubles as backup safety.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe more we understand sharks, the more respectful we can be. And the more freedom we can give our guests,\u201d he said. \u201cWe read the sharks\u2019 behavior in real time. That allows us to make small adjustments and stay in the water longer, safely.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guests frequently show up nervous\u2014but many come back again and again.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Not Just Any Shark Tour<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are now <\/span>seven full-time shark tour operations<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> off O\u02bbahu\u2019s North Shore, with even more offering sharks alongside snorkeling, whale watching and fishing. But Loewenstine is clear: <\/span>specialization matters<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s not to knock other operators, but when you\u2019re doing a little bit of everything, it\u2019s hard to have the level of expertise you really need with sharks,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re all in, every day.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And this isn\u2019t a zoo. Sharks aren\u2019t guaranteed to appear, though they often do. The team works in deep water, about three miles offshore, where the ocean drops away into hundreds of feet of blue. When the sharks arrive, it\u2019s on their terms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat&#8217;s part of what makes it so powerful. This is real nature,\u201d Loewenstine said. \u201cWe&#8217;re just guests in their home.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Beyond the Dive: Life as an Ocean Explorer<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When he\u2019s not leading shark dives, Loewenstine\u2019s still in the water\u2014or far from it. He\u2019s also a passionate wildlife photographer, traveling the globe from the plains of Africa to the tundra of the Arctic in search of wild moments to capture. But he always returns to Hale\u02bbiwa, where the ocean is never far and community runs deep.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHere, whether you\u2019re a fisherman, surfer, sailor or diver\u2014there\u2019s this shared love for the sea,\u201d he said. \u201cIt connects us.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Shark Diving on O\u02bbahu<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loewenstine\u2019s company runs multiple dives daily, with morning trips offering the best conditions.
