Rising prominently above Honolulu\u2019s skyline, <\/span>L\u0113\u02bbahi<\/b>, also known as <\/span>Diamond Head Crater<\/b>, is one of O\u02bbahu\u2019s most iconic landmarks. From postcard photos to panoramic Instagram shots, this volcanic tuff cone has long captured the imagination of locals and visitors alike. But beyond its picturesque silhouette lies a rich history and a hike that rewards every step with unforgettable views.<\/span><\/p>\n

A Crater with a Story<\/b><\/h3>\n

L\u0113\u02bbahi was formed more than 300,000 years ago during a single, explosive eruption. Though dormant now, it stands as a prominent reminder of O\u02bbahu\u2019s volcanic past. The name <\/span>L\u0113\u02bbahi<\/span><\/i> comes from Hawaiian legend\u2014\u201clae\u201d meaning “brow of the tuna” and \u201c\u02bbahi\u201d referring to the fish. Early Hawaiians thought the crater resembled the shape of a tuna\u2019s dorsal fin. The name <\/span>Diamond Head<\/span><\/i> was later coined by 19th-century British sailors who mistook the crater\u2019s glimmering calcite crystals for diamonds.<\/span><\/p>\n

Historically, the crater served as a strategic military lookout. In the early 1900s, the U.S. Army built bunkers, tunnels, and observation posts to defend the coastline. Many of these structures remain, adding an intriguing layer of history to the hiking experience.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Hike to the Top<\/b><\/h3>\n

The <\/span>Diamond Head Summit Trail<\/b> is a moderate hike that\u2019s just under <\/span>1.6 miles round trip<\/b> but packs a punch with its steep elevation gain\u2014about <\/span>560 feet<\/b> from the crater floor to the summit. The path begins with a paved walkway and transitions to dirt switchbacks, narrow stairs, and even a tunnel before opening up to the summit platform.<\/span><\/p>\n
