Photo by Ray Mark.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For too long, visitors have only known Waik\u012bk\u012b as a bustling tourist destination with high-end shopping, packed beaches and the world-famous mai tai. That is changing. More Native Hawaiians are reclaiming this space and reintroducing traditions once lost to the postcard image of white sand and palm trees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before visiting these attractions, it&#8217;s helpful to understand the history of Hawai\u02bbi\u2019s most popular tourist destination.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>A Very Brief History of Waik\u012bk\u012b<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Long before Capt. James Cook arrived on Kaua\u02bbi, Waik\u012bk\u012b \u2013 Hawaiian for \u201cspouting waters\u201d \u2013 was covered in wetland<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> lo\u02bbi kalo<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (taro fields) and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">loko i\u02bba<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (fishponds). In the late 1700s, King Kamehame I took up residency here, and it was a popular retreat for royalty.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everything began to change in the 1820s when American missionaries arrived to convert <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kanaka Maoli<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Native Hawaiians) to Christianity. Foreigners moved into Waik\u012bk\u012b, immigrant laborers came to O\u02bbahu to work sugarcane plantations and Matson steamships began bringing visitors to see \u201cparadise.\u201d By the late 1800s, the first hotels opened in Waik\u012bk\u012b, and former plantation workers began planting rice in what had once been <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kalo<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> fields.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1893, with the help of the U.S. military, American businessmen illegally overthrew the Hawaiian monarchy. Five years later, despite the efforts of Queen Lili\u02bboukalani and the Hawaiian people, the United States annexed the Kingdom of Hawai\u02bbi.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1906, the Honolulu Board of Health declared Waik\u012bk\u012b\u2019s wetlands a public health threat, which led to dredging, the creation of the Ala Wai Canal and the filling in of fishponds and wetlands to make way for real estate development \u2013 now home to Waik\u012bk\u012b\u2019s hotels, businesses and beaches. Each one introduces the area to visitors in a whole new light \u2013 and should not be missed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>\u00a0\u2018Auana: Cirque du Soleil<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year, Cirque du Soleil launched its first resident production in Hawai\u02bbi. WOW! and curated by local artist Kamea Hadar<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, this immersive art experience located <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on Kal\u0101kaua Avenue <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at the Hyatt Regency Waik\u012bk\u012b Beach Resort and Spa traces Waik\u012bk\u012b\u2019s layered history through murals and interactive installations. Photo by Sarah Burchard.<\/p><\/div>\n<h3><b>The Return of Kapaemahu<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Healer Stones of Kapaemahu are an ancient sacred site of healing located on Waik\u012bk\u012b Beach, across from<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the Hyatt Regency Waik\u012bk\u012b Beach Resort and Spa. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.queerhistoriesofhawaii.org\/kapaemahushow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Return of Kapaemahu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a free hula show presented by Qwaves Kanaka Pakipika \u2013 a local non-profit &#8220;dedicated to acceptance, respect and inclusion for all&#8221; \u2013 as part of their <em>Lei Pua \u02bbAla<\/em>, or &#8220;garland of fragrant flowers,&#8221; project.
