And each year, O\u02bbahu residents and visitors alike gather to celebrate this unique, traditional instrument and to collectively enjoy the beautiful music it makes.<\/p>\n<h2>Laughter, Love and Hope<\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Laughter, Love &amp; Hope at Ukulele Festival Hawaii 2016\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nMjwafXdg6Y?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>With a stated mission \u201cto bring laughter, love and hope to children and adults throughout Hawai\u02bbi and the world through the music of the \u02bbukulele,\u201d Roy and Kathy Sakuma \u2014 avid \u02bbukulele masters in their own rites who have dedicated their lives to spearing the abounding joy of the instrument to others \u2014 hosted the 1st Annual Ukulele Festival in 1971. At the time, playing the \u02bbukulele was not a widespread or popular pastime, and Roy really wanted to open people\u2019s eyes to the true gift and joy that was all things \u02bbukulele.<\/p>\n<p>Roy envisioned creating a community forum, where people could come and, with no cost to them at all, witness the wonder of an \u02bbukulele being played, to see that one soloist could make melodies that could stand on their own and which were marked by sophistication, class and virtuosity, not merely rhythms to be relegated as background music. This forum came to fruition as a free concert, now celebrating its 50th year.<\/p>\n<h2>Celebrate the 50th Ukulele Festival<\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Ukulele Festival Hawaii 2014 -- Jake Shimabukuro\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JCwzlqAl86w?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This year, on Sunday, July 19, 2019, from the hours of 10:00 a.m. &#8211; 5 p.m., come join the party at the 50th Annual Ukulele Festival. Held at Kapi\u02bbolani Park Bandstand in Waik\u012bk\u012b, this now cherished Hawai\u02bbi summer tradition has become the largest \u02bbukulele festival of its kind in the entire world, attracting crowds numbering in the thousands to its grassy lawns in order to enjoy musical entertainment from local \u02bbukulele masters as well as guest artists from across the globe.<\/p>\n<p>A special highlight each year is the \u02bbukulele orchestra, which consists of more than 800 student participants, the majority of which are keiki \u2014 a testament of the success of Roy\u2019s dream to foster appreciation and excitement about the \u02bbukulele within the next generation.<\/p>\n<p>There will be about 22 to 25 different performances. In addition to the entertainment, there will be food booths, \u02bbukulele displays, complimentary \u02bbukulele lessons, and souvenirs to purchase. Admission is free and so is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukulelefestivalhawaii.org\/\">parking and shuttle service<\/a> from Kapiolani Community College.<\/p>\n<p>Family friendly and loads of fun, this festival is so much more than just a free outdoor concert, it\u2019s truly a chance to commune with one another, brought together by the beauty of the music of the \u02bbukulele amid the gorgeous backdrop of O\u02bbahu\u2019s iconic Diamond Head.
