They may even start licking their lips thinking about where to eat on this magnificent mile. Located at the end of Waikiki just walking distance from some of Hawaii&#8217;s most famous restaurants, most visitors to Oahu don\u2019t even recognize Kapahulu Avenue\u2019s appeal. From anywhere in Waikiki it\u2019s an Uber ride of less than $10 to some of my favorite local, Hawaiian, Japanese and Portuguese foods. Locally owned for more than 50 years, it\u2019s here you can enjoy a BBQ teriyaki beef plate or loco moco and one of their slush floats. Don\u2019t be intimidated by the long lines; they move quicker than expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Uncle Bo\u2019s Pupu Bar and Grill<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-65892\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"720\" height=\"491\" src=\"https:\/\/hawaii.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IMG_5851.jpg\" alt=\"Image of Uncle Bo's, Kapahulu, Honolulu\" class=\"wp-image-65892\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hawaii.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IMG_5851.jpg 720w, https:\/\/hawaii.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IMG_5851-300x205.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hawaii.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IMG_5851-267x182.jpg 267w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><figcaption><em>Uncle Bo&#8217;s, Kapahulu, Honolulu, Hawaii.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As you move up the street on the same side, pass St. Mark\u2019s Episcopal Church and you\u2019ll hit Uncle Bo\u2019s Pupu Bar and Grill. It doesn\u2019t look like much from the outside, but inside it\u2019s alive and vibrant. They\u2019re only open for dinner and are known for their great pupus, or appetizers, and a full bar. Ask for Uncle Bo while you\u2019re there \u2014 he loves to come out of the kitchen and take a shot with the guests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Side Street Inn<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-65894\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"720\" height=\"540\" src=\"http:\/\/hawaii.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IMG_5856.jpg\" alt=\"Image of Side Street Inn, Kapahulu, Honolulu\" class=\"wp-image-65894\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hawaii.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IMG_5856.jpg 720w, https:\/\/hawaii.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IMG_5856-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><figcaption><em>Side Street Inn, Kapahulu, Honolulu, Hawaii.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Diagonally across the street is another iconic Oahu eatery: Side Street Inn. Set with big tables and plenty of space, this is my go-to spot to bring guests and friends from out of town. Don&#8217;t leave without ordering the <em>poke<\/em>, fried pork chops, kalbi and their popular fried rice. Side Street Inn also has great wines, local beers and cocktails. Since chefs are known to eat at Side Street Inn after work, you can trust that the food is good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ono Hawaiian Foods<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-65896\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"720\" height=\"533\" src=\"https:\/\/hawaii.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IMG_5872.jpg\" alt=\"Image of Ono's Hawaiian Food, Kapahulu, Honolulu, Hawaii.\" class=\"wp-image-65896\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hawaii.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IMG_5872.jpg 720w, https:\/\/hawaii.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IMG_5872-300x222.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><figcaption><em>Ono&#8217;s Hawaiian Food, Kapahulu, Honolulu, Hawaii.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Stay on the left of Kapahulu Avenue and about 50 yards past the stoplight, you\u2019ll see one of Hawaii\u2019s favorites: Ono Hawaiian Foods. This is definitely one of the best hole-in-the-wall places you\u2019ll find filled with character and old school booth seating. Be sure to order the <em>laulau<\/em>, <em>kalua<\/em> pig, chicken long rice and <em>poi<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Leonard\u2019s Bakery<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-65895\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"720\" height=\"540\" src=\"https:\/\/hawaii.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IMG_5857.jpg\" alt=\"Image of Leonard's Bakery, Kapahulu, Honolulu, Hawaii.\" class=\"wp-image-65895\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hawaii.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IMG_5857.jpg 720w, https:\/\/hawaii.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IMG_5857-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><figcaption><em>Leonard&#8217;s Bakery, Kapahulu, Honolulu, Hawaii.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Just a few blocks up at the top of Kapahulu Avenue, you\u2019ll find Hawaiian gold. Some people say it\u2019s a bad addiction, but I say it\u2019s worth it. Malasadas from Leonard\u2019s Bakery are hands down one of Hawaii\u2019s best desserts. Since its inception in 1952, this family-owned business knows how to fry some of the best Portuguese donuts. Originally created as a marketing ploy for Fat Tuesday, the malasadas that are made to order stuck around. The original malasada has a light doughy texture and is covered with lots of sugar.
